Teaching Artists/Artists

Frequently Asked Questions About TATIP

Dates for 2009-2010 Training

The Community~Word Project believes that trained teaching artists have a greater chance of creating successful experiences for the young people and classroom teachers we serve.

Our twenty-five week Training & Internship Program offers new teaching artists the opportunity to transform their creative skills into innovative educational tools while gaining hands-on teaching experience.

Whether the learning environment is a public school classroom or a community center, a prison or a halfway house, teaching artists benefit from a comprehensive approach to training.

Due to generous support from the Dana Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council on the Arts, we now offer three concurrent trainings; one geared toward teaching K-6th grade students, one geared toward addressing the needs of middle and high school students and one geared for experienced teaching artists.

We recruit artists from MFA programs in the New York City Area and from performance and visual arts venues across the city. The training is open to practicing professional creative writers, visual artists, theater artists, media artists, dancers and musicians.

The Training and Internship Program takes place between October and May, and includes training seminars, debriefing meetings and internships where participants observe and assist in CWP residencies in NYC public schools under the mentorship of experienced CWP staff teaching artists. The program requirements vary for the three different levels of training (New and Beginning, Advanced, and Undergraduate); please see each application for more details.

We encourage all serious writers, theater artists, visual artists, media artists, dancers and musicians to apply. (You need not be affiliated with an MFA program).

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2009-10 Teacher Artist Training and Internship Program.  Check back next year for 2010-11 TATIP enrollment information.
